Volunteer Event: Seed Collection

  • Sharing Our Roots Farm 4905 315th Street West Northfield, Minnesota, 55057 United States (map)

Let’s work together with Sharing Our Roots and Minnesota Women in Conservation to collect a variety of seeds from prairie habitat.

Enjoy an afternoon of tranquility walking around the pollinator garden at Sharing Our Roots Farm, collecting seeds from native plants. Prairie seed collection is essential for restoring and maintaining the ecological health of prairies, which are among the most threatened habitats in the State of Minnesota.

What to Expect

Native seed collection includes walking through natural areas, identifying, picking, and cleaning seeds from wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs. It can be described as a tranquil, meditative experience. This will be hands-on work walking over uneven terrain in high grasses and plants. We recommend this event only for individuals ages 16+.

  • What you should bring: wear long pants, sturdy work shoes, a hat, work gloves (optional), a reusable water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and your enthusiasm :)

  • What we’ll provide: an assortment of light snacks, water (in a cooler jug), and gloves.

Accessibility

  • Non-accessible parking on uneven terrain

  • Porta-potty bathrooms available

  • Taking place outdoors
