Looking for an excuse to get out in nature and give back to the community for Earth Day?
Join us for a volunteer event at St. Olaf Natural Lands. While aspens and willows are native plants, they can be aggressive and outcompete other desirable prairie species. You can help preserve local grasslands by cutting back these species by hand.
Dress for outdoor weather conditions.
Long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
Bring a water bottle, too!
This pin is for a gate with a parking area that visitors can use to access the Natural Lands from North Ave. There should be plenty of parking at that spot (please do not block the gate) and just across the road if more space is needed. Follow signs for the volunteer event and enjoy a short 1/4 mile walk through the St. Olaf prairie.
The event runs from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Feel free to drop in at any time! While registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcome.

More about our Volunteer Program
Our volunteer program (“Volunteer Corps”) connects people and organizations with hands-on opportunities to protect and improve our water and natural environment in southeast Minnesota. We do this work by partnering with local organizations and recruiting volunteers for restoration and conservation activities, such as invasive species removal, native seed collection, tree and native species plantings, and our signature Watershed-Wide Cleanup.
More about our St. Olaf Natural Lands
The Natural Lands, encompassing over 430 acres surrounding the St. Olaf college campus, is centered on three primary goals: conservation, education, and recreation. Much of the areas that make up the Natural Lands have been restored from corn and soybean agriculture. Serving as a refuge for native species, the forests, prairies, and wetlands of the Natural Lands encompass a wide variety of niches allowing a multitude of Minnesota species to thrive.
More about Northfield Earth Day
Once a year, Northfield Earth Day celebrates the community’s efforts and progress on sustainability and resiliency.
At the annual “perennial” celebration, we continue to work to inspire neighbors to think about our changing climate and make healthy planetary choices by learning, engaging, and taking action with a variety of initiatives and organizations through hands-on workshops, service opportunities, presentations, and one on one relational connections.
